From the Giants website:
ST. PETERSBURG -- The move may have been made to try to rattle Jerome Williams. The effect was just the opposite.

Tampa Bay forced the Giants starter to remove his puka shell necklace in the second inning, and he angrily tossed it into the dugout all the way from the mound. Williams finished off that batter to end the second and pitched a three-hitter for seven innings Tuesday as San Francisco downed the Devil Rays, 7-3.

The necklace is a prized treasure from Williams' mother, who died from breast cancer a few years ago.

"I do get fired up, but I will not show it on the mound," Williams said. "I was taught at a young age to don't let them see your emotions. If they do, they have a one-up on you. And I don't want to give anyone the advantage."
